April 4, 2008 12:01 AM

The anxiously awaited ColdFusion 8.0.1 release went live today on adobe.com.

This release marks extended 64-bit operating system support for Windows, Linux, and Mac. It also delivers the latest operating system support for Windows Server 2008 and Mac OS X 10.5, as well as updates to the latest FCKeditor and more. Read the FAQ to learn more.

You can access 8.0.1 in a few ways:

- Install the full kits from the adobe.com store or trial page

- Install the updater kits from the updater page on top of existing ColdFusion 8 installations.

Now I can stop replying with "verrrrrry sooooooon" in response to "When will Gemeni be out?"

Hi Kristen,

Congrats on getting the updater out the door. There's just one small problem with grabbing it at the moment: Download link is still pointing to http://download-staging.macromedia.com

Well, I was excited about this and immediately downloaded the 64-bit version this morning, only to be dismayed when I read that it only supported 64-bit Mac-Intel! Unfortunately my system is a 64-bit PPC. What was the reasoning behind not support both architectures?

Unfortunately, there is no officially supported 64-bit JVM for PPC from Sun or even Apple for that matter. There are some open source alternatives, but we can't officially support a platform that neither the developer of Java, or the developer of the OS support.

Even on apples site, http://developer.apple.com/java/javaleopard.html, you will see that they say... in regards to 64-bit computing...
"On Macs with Intel Core 2 Duo or Xeon processors, this support is extended to Java applications."

Sorry! :)

Aaargh! After so much anticipation for the 64-bit version, the release notes are the first mention I've seen of the 64-bit version being Enterprise edition only - thus putting it well out of the reach of your average developer. Much like the crippled CFTHREAD in Standard edition - one of the features I was really looking forward to using in CF8, until I discovered the limitations...

We've added support for ColdFusion Standard to run in 32-bit mode on a 64-bit Operating System and 64-bit Web server. So, while you may not be able to take full advantage of 64-bit with ColdFusion Standard, we do actually support the use of ColdFusion Standard on a 64-bit OS for the first time. That's at least a very big step in the right direction.
