Quick RIA Survey - Please Help

October 6, 2008 6:52 PM

I'm doing a *very* short survey (3-7 quick questions). Please do a quick favor and respond to it here: Quick RIA Survey

and post it to your blogs and pass along to CF and/or non-CF friends and foes.

I'm wrapping up results by next Monday the 13th, so please fill it out today. If you do I just might show you where to get a cool new CF8 tag poster. ;)

Bob - Sorry about that. I fixed this issue. Are you able to go back and select the appropriate answers?

Umm, unless I missed it, it doesn't ask for my email address or even name, so how will you get the poster info to me ?

I'm not sure I understand the difference between an AJAX developer and a JavaScript developer. Wouldn't an AJAX developer have to be a JS developer?

I just took the survey but wasn't prompted to give the contact info. I'd really, really love to have that poster . . .

I'm just wondering how you're gonna send the poster if it has never asked for my name or email address? Should we all send you emails?

I completed the survey and all I got was a blank screen on this url:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s_thankyou.aspx?sm=%2f...

I tried on FF and Safari (obviously I'm on a Mac).

And that poster???

Thanks,

Rich

In addition to the shared poster grumblings, some of the questions were odd. For instance, it distinguishes between Flex and ActionScript & AJAX and Javascript ... they aren't the same thing, but how do I program in Flex w/o Actionscript (maybe AS = Flash only) or AJAX w/o Javascript? Not a big deal, but it caused question 5 to be ambiguous.

Also about the poster ... the Flex folks released the full resolution pdfs for their posters, any chance that there is a place to download the CF8 version?

Thanks

You haven't been tricked. I've been in the process of getting a site set up so that you can register for the posters and it will be ready this week. I added a field to the survey to collect addresses that way too.You can go back into the survey and add your address info. For folks who filled out the survey, this will save you from registering separately for the poster later.

Re: issues on MAC. I used survey monkey. I'll have to report the bug to them.

re: Q5 - I want to understand if there is a set of people who think of themselves as AJAX developers vs. AS or JS devs. Or are they percieved as the same. Yep, a dev can do AS w/o Flex too.

I found out what the issue is on Sarafi/FF. The survey is set to close the browser window upon completion. So when you click the Done button on the thank you page, it is going to a blank page because of the active scripting on Safari. The response is being completed and fully submitted. Basically the same thing that happens in Firefox also happens with Safari:

If you have the Survey Completion setting to "close the window" upon completion, then note the following:

* The only time in Firefox that the Exit Survey Link will properly close the window is if the survey link itself is posted on a web page. The link must reside in an actual browser when the browser itself opens.

* If you click the link in an email message or copy and paste that link into the web browser's address bar, then the Exit Survey Link will not close the survey page.

o The survey will remain open and it will appear to do nothing.
o You will then have to click the red X button located in the upper right hand of the browser window.

I changed the behavior from “close window” upon clicking on “done” to redirect back to my blog instead.

Europe excluded :( I guess we'll never get offered free tag posters over on this side of the planet. Maybe Adobe just think European developers are so great that we don't need tag posters :P

...I still want one though :(

Kristen -- I've seen many of my clients lose tons of credibility by knocking out a quick Survey Monkey survey... it always seems like such a good idea at the time. Because now people are returning to the survey and either duplicating their previous answere, or just quickly checking boxes without reading the forms, just to get the poster, your survey results are polluted now, so they are not usable for any decision making. But we still love you anyway!

Jonathan/Roberto/David - Why do you have the think that the tag posters are not available to you? They are in fact available to you.

Ron - people can only fill out the survey once from each machine, however I did open it up to allow customers to go back to fill in their demographic data for the poster shipment.

Kristen,
Thanks for the opportunity to get the posters. However, is there any way to purchase or otherwise acquire the posters in larger quantities? Specifically, I'd like to have them to hand out to my students in ColdFusion classes. You can contact me off-list if you'd like at rob(at)filmstosee(dot)com.

but there's no selection for countries.. all i see is a list of 50 states... I haven't lived in States for a while, (maybe I will ask my brother to receive it for me, but he's also a CF developer, he might take it from me though, lol)....

Yea, adobe should be more considered in international Adobe user, the adobe user group in Taiwan really stink. AUG Taiwan used to have a php based forum, but now they told us that the server went down, so they had to used google's forum instead. although Google did a great job a their forum, but it is not designed to have discussions of multi-subjects. so now AUG Taiwan is dominated by flex developers. no places for CF~

@ non-US folks, Jonathan et al, yes you can put in your international addresses into the form (lots of customers outside of the US have already). Simply skip the state field if it doesn’t apply. There is a field labeled *country* that you can enter your country into. Sheesh ;)

@ Jonathan, we can chat offline about the Tawain AUG. Not sure I follow what happened there but will address it with you directly.

@Ron – In _any_ survey, we rely on the respondents’ integrity. I hope that I can trust the CF community to not do what you stated and instead submit their data with integrity. Community projects like the tag posters are a lot of work (thanks Liz/Teratech for working on these with me) and take a lot of people time and resources at Adobe to get the packaging & distribution of them operational. For example, we are having each poster hand rolled into large tubes so that they are not creased when you get them. I hope in turn you can take a few minutes to answer honestly and accurately. I love doing projects like this for the community and I am planning on making these posters available more broadly soon. However, as a small thank you for your time on the survey, I am giving them to you without you needing to go through CF8 product registration as others will have to in order to get a poster.

@ ALL - if you didn't enter your phone number in the survey form field, YOU WON'T GET A POSTER. Ops people at Adobe tell me they need phone numbers for shipping.

I see the survey remembered my previous answers when I went back to give the contact details, so it was fairly easy to do.
